Exhibition "Mayer VS Bryukhanov"

Сreativity as the light passed through the prism

VS unio Art Gallery supported by the Yekaterinburg Gallery of Modern Art since February 19, presents the unique collaboration of figurative photography by George Mayer and abstract painting by Sergey Bryukhanov in the project “Mayer VS Bryukhanov” located on “Arma”. For the first time, guests will have the opportunity to see paintings and photographs not in competition, but in interaction. In the gallery space, the classic controversy will be a thing of the past and the actual dialogue of our time will be born.

For the first time at the VS unio gallery, an original exhibition will be created, helping the viewer to discover not only new qualities of painting and photography but also to understand the artistic consonance of the approaches of two recognized modern masters. Sergey Bryukhanov in his polyptych “Spectrum” continues to use the language of “color form” established in theory and practice of avant-garde artists. At the same time, the aesthetics of the light-and-white drawing of modernist photography inspired George Mayer to create exquisite photographs of the “Libido & Mortido” series.

In the works of both artists represented at the exhibition, the main role is played by the composition. Sergey Bryukhanov builds it with color. Thanks to the rich color spectrum, the painter creates familiar natural shapes and constructions. According to the theory of Bryukhanov, color is the light that has passed through the prism of sensory perception. The rich palette of his abstract works is capable not only of revealing the objects of the world around him on canvas, but also making him feel the emotion laid by the artist.

A similar principle of creation of form can be traced in the work of photoartist George Mayer, whose approach is based on the play of light and shadow, its spectrum is achromatic, the entire range of black and white “palette” that builds strict lines. As for the classic Czech photograph of František Drtikol, whose experiments influenced on all the subsequent development of fashion and nude photography, for George Mayer the source of inspiration is female nature, transformed by the magical play of light and shadow.

The unusual format of combining photography and painting represents the harmonious interplay of Color, Light and Shadow.
